Kashiwa Island, Kochi Prefecture: Divers Must See the Ocean Recommended by Guides from Around Japan in Winter 2023 Serial No.1

For divers who are thinking, “I wonder what that sea is like this year…” or “Where should I go in winter…,” guides from all over Japan provide information on local waters this season!

For this issue, we spoke with Mr. Meguro, the representative of Kashiwa Island Diving Service SEAZOO, which has a dive store in Hata-gun, Kochi Prefecture.

Editor: Could you tell us about the ocean you recommend?

Mr. Meguro: The Kashiwa Island area, the Any area, and the Amanchi area!

Kashiwa Island’s favorite point “Gohama

Editor: How is the sea now?

Mr. Meguro: First of all, “Gohama” is the main point of Kashiwa Island and has abundant creatures and can be enjoyed consistently throughout the season. The sandy beach is a paradise for gobies! You can also see the symbiosis of different species of gobies.

A sunfish and a Yasha goby living together in harmony.

Next is “Minka Shimo,” where you can see Homura gobies every year, and this year there are also many spiny lobsters.

Finally, Tsunasaki is a point where you can see a wide variety of creatures, including gobies, snappers, pygmy seahorses, and ragged corals.

Editor: So you can see many different kinds of gobies?

Mr. Meguro: That’s right. In addition, recently we have been seeing many creatures that are rare for Kashiwa Island at all points. For example, the Gull Goby, the Morishita Datura Goby, the Horseshoe Scorpionfish, and the Montsuki Frogfish.

The scalloped hammerhead goby, commonly known as the galgoby.
The boreopacific scorpionfish, which is easy to photograph because it moves little.
The gold dots on the dorsal fins of the Morishita’s goby are very cool!

Editor: This is an ocean where you want to take your time and enjoy underwater photography. What kind of guests do you have these days?

Mr. Meguro: Since last year, we have had an increase in the number of guests who are diving Kashiwa Island for the first time. Also, more and more guests are coming from the Kanto area by car.

Editor: We are happy to have first-time guests! Any last words?

Mr. Meguro: We have four staff members, and each team can be divided into smaller groups, so you can take your time to both take pictures and observe according to your preferences. We also have tanks of enriched air available for the last day of your trip.

Editor: Thank you, Mr. Meguro!
